Charles Stark Draper is honored for his outstanding contributions to aviation and space technology by his development of gyroscopic fire control systems and inertial guidance and navigation systems for aircraft; his development of precision computer-controlled and programmable inertial guidance and navigation systems that enabled the United States to produce reliable ballistic missiles for defense and preservation of peace, and for its astronauts to travel safely in space and land on and return from the moon; and for developing innovative educational processes that effectively interfaced academic education with aeronautical and astronautical engineering and science.
